NANO NANOWRIMO TIME

November 7, 2008

Yikes!

We’re entering week two of nanowrimo.

Now, since you are most likely on the Internet, it is very possible that you have heard of nanowrimo.

If you haven’t: NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. During the month of November many insane people attempt to write a fifty thousand word novel. I am one of those people.

So far I have 7,592 words. This is NOT GREAT AT ALL. It is more than I wrote in all of nanowrimo 2007, though. Which goes to show you how much ambition I had last year.

There are so many distractions when you set out to write a novel in thirty days. Schoolwork to be done. A house to clean. Music that wants to be listened to as you dance around in front of the computer while not writing. A friend with a shiny new Wii. The Interwebs to surf. Showers to take.

These obstacles may be hard to overcome, but if you reach 50,000 words I suspect it would be worth it.

Obviously I am not all that committed. I am writing a blog while I could be working, after all.

But I don’t think my mind can handle much more. My fingers are resisting the keyboard. The words I type make no sense. I will be writing along, and then: Jupiter applesause finger trap jumped. What?! That is not a coherent sentence. It does not belong in a novel. It should not come into existence at all. But things like that happen. I will be going along, and then all of a sudden I won’t know what the shift button does. Or maybe I will forget portions of the alphabet.

It is all part of the process.

Eventually, I will wise up and put on some They Might Be Giants and actually write. Maybe it will only be three hundred words. But that is three hundred more.
