In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a fan of young adult fiction. Being a fan of YA, it was only a matter of time before I read one of E. Lockhart’s books. I have been wanting to for a while, and after reading the inside flap of The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks I immediately felt a burning desire to read it. So imagine my joy when I saw a nice little selection of E.’s books in my local library, and I managed to borrow a copy of the very book you will hopefully read a review of in a few moments.
First, a briefing.
Frankie Landau-Banks’ sophomore year at a prestigious boarding school has come, though not without a few changes since her freshman year. For one, she found herself with a new body. She has a gorgeous senior boyfriend (who is involved in an intriguing secret society). She is possibly insane, and most likely a criminal.
What caused her to be this way? It is all recorded in her disreputable history.
Now, a review.
This book is a wonderful adventure and thoroughly entertaining, but beyond that it is something more. It is a story about an ambitious young lady who will do what she has to do to earn respect. It is a story of reaching your potential and not letting people hold you down. It is a story of a girl trying to prove herself as something beyond a good figure.
I think this book is wonderful. My only complaints are that at times I feel the feminist themes are a little too much. (Not to say that women shouldn’t be powerful, strong, and courageous. You go girl!… Did I really just say that? “You go girl”?) I give it a four, maybe four and a half out of five.
